Cave Diving Photography

Descending into the earth is an experience like no other. Cave diving is a passion of mine and trying to capture the beauty and grandeur of it can be a challenge. Cave photography requires even more specialized camera equipment than typical scuba diving and lots of extra lighting. On most occasions I will complete multiple dives to a specific site before bringing my camera along to capture it. Darkness, tight spaces, silt, and water flow are just some of the obstacles to overcome. Why do I do it you might ask? Because there is no where on our planet quite like underwater caves.

Please note that cave diving is an extreme technical sport. Under no circumstances should anyone attempt to cave dive unless properly trained to do so. I have many years of experience and all the certifications to complete the dives you see photographed here.

The Devil's Eye

This cave entrance is named the Devil's eye specifically for this uncommon phenomenon. When the red tannic river waters flood high enough to meet the clear blue water of the aquifer pushing out of the cave and the sun is JUST right over head you will get this glowing color effect.

Ginnie Springs is an iconic site in North Florida. The water is gin clear and when the sun shines down you are gifted a spectacular light show.

Entering the Devil's Eye

Here a diver enters into the Devil's cave system. The clear blue aquifer water is pushing up and out of the ground while the flooded river water gives the red glow above.

Sparkling Cave

There are multiple entrances into the Devil's cave system. Here we see the light rays shining through from the point of view of the 'decompression' shelf where divers sit at the end of a long dive before they can surface safely.

Dancing Light

Jug Springs on the Ichetucknee is a small opening in the aquifer that pumps out enough water to help fill the river. When the sun is directly overhead you get an amazing light ray effect!

Eons in Silt

This location in the cave is millions of years of clay built up into a beautiful bank. You can see each layer deposited a different color.

Double Layer

Back about 1,000ft back in this cave the tunnels branch and drop to a unique double layer before heading deeper into the earth.

Sweet Surprise

More than 2,500ft back into the cave sweet surprise is a tunnel that restricts down before opening up again into a fantastic fissure.

Bedding Plane

Jug hole cave is famous for its tight bedding plane restriction a diver must go through to enter the system. Sidemounted tanks are required to fit.
